I just completely shocked a drive through worker at In-n-Out which persuaded me to write this post and defend myself. It’s not even a big thing really. I mean, do I need to defend myself? No of course not, no one but me and that guy know what happened anyway. But I feel bad… the thing is, I have certain pet peeves about my soda “profession”. I guess too much addiction and fanaticism brings out pet peeves that could be unhealthy and make most of the free world gawk and wince in uncomfortableness.
What did I do? I sent my soda back into the window to be filled up. Yea I get it, it’s busy and you’ve got to move through an unreal amount of people through the drive-thru per day, especially at In-n-Out. But we all know the insane margin these places make on soda compared to what we pay. A fountain soda costs something like $0.15 per cup of soda, most of that cost is the cup itself and we’re paying what like $1.39? Or $0.99 at McDonalds or Sonic or something like that. Still, huge profits… The thing is I don’t mind paying it, I do it everyday. But when the guy in the drive through gives my cup a quick fill up and by the time the carbonation subsides it’s down to 2/3 of the cup, that’s not cool.
If I’m eating there I couldn’t care less because I can refill it in the blink of an eye. But when it’s to-go, there’s hell to pay. I’m someone who usually doesn’t leave any soda left in the cup so it’s just as much about me running out of soda before I’ve finished my burger than it is about getting jipped on the money.
Let me just clarify, I’m nice about it. Usually they hand you the drink as they run your credit card, so I have time to open the lid. When the guy comes back I just ask “Would you mind topping that off for me?”I guess not too many people do that. The guy probably assumed I guzzled a huge amount, but I never did. There must be some crazier fanatics than me that would blow up on the guy but that ain’t me. Now I’m not crazy, if it’s a few centimeters below the lid it’s all good, I get it, I’m just talking significant shortages. If I shorted the guy on the total you better believe he’d keep his hand out there until I filled it right up!
